Tweets From Boston, Day 1

On Thursday, I attended the American Society of Laser Medicine & Surgery’s annual meeting, held this year at the Prudential Center in Boston.  The wifi access in the Sheraton Hotel at which the conference was being held wasn’t particularly great, but I was able to update some of the exciting new developments in dermatology via Twitter.

In case you missed it, here is a rundown of all the things I learned that first day:

@mainelaserskin

8:15 A.M.-  At American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery annual meeting in Boston, will be tweeting re updates and new/reenforced old concepts.

9:51 A.M.- From ASLMS mtg, #Fraxel best treatment for older more pale stretch marks decreasing skin atrophy and wrinkling.

10:21 A.M.- From ASLMS, #Fraxel can be used to reduce precancerous actinic keratosis by up to 88% after 3 treatments.

10:28 A.M.- From ASLMS, for #Pelleve since collagen tightening+stimulation is ongoing after treatment for months, 6 month followup picture is important.

10:52 A.M.- From ASLMS, noninvasive body contouring very hot topic this year. Surgical liposuction use is down about 30% while nonsurgical up same %.

12:34 P.M.- From ASLMS mtg, after noninvasive body sculpting, fat isn’t excreted from body immediately but is transported by lymphatics to the liver.

12:49 P.M.- During body sculpting, fat transported to the liver does NOT cause damage,elevation of liver tests or increase in triglycerides (blood fat).

1:03 P.M.- After ultrasound body sculpting treatments, initial improvements continue for 2-3 months due to fat loss+skin tightening over treated areas.

1:10 P.M.- During laser hair removal, permanent effects are due to damage to stem cells within the bulge at base of root preventing hair retro with.

1:34 P.M.- In laser hair removal, best results are always with lighter skin and darker hair. Also, best results with no tan!

1:47 P.M.- On AVERAGE, during hair removal, 3 treatments will result in 70% and 6 treatments in 95% improvement. As always, every one is different.

2:04 P.M.- For hair removal, thinner skin areas such as upper lip+underamrs respond better+faster than thicker skin areas such as the chin.

2:59 P.M.- Latest hypothesis re malasma is that melanocytes in these patients are metabolically overactive and easily stimulated by hormones or trauma.

3:04 P.M.- Latest recommended treatment for melasma includes lower energy laser followed by topical therapy w/sunscreen+melanocytes inhibiting cream.
