More Concerned About Wrinkles Than Skin Cancer? Still Use Sunscreen

http://courtneyoutloud.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/sunburn_thehonchnet.jpgI have been telling patients at Maine Laser Skin Care for years that using sunscreen regularly can protect the skin from premature aging. Now newly published research backs me up.

In an Australian study recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers showed that people who applied sunscreen everyday showed 24% less skin aging than those who use the cream only occasionally.  This study was part of a larger skin cancer prevention study and involved over 900 adults younger than 55 living in Australia.

Half of the participants applied sunscreen daily to exposed areas and reapplied after swimming or heavy sweating. The other half were told to  use sunscreen as they normally would. These two groups were evaluated  over a period of four and a half years.

The dermatologists involved in the study feel that the results have a double significance since reduced skin damage that would cause wrinkles also means a low risk of skin cancer.  They also note that vanity is a strong motivating force when it comes to sunscreen use. Basically, the threat of wrinkles does more to change behavior than the threat of skin cancer, which is still a good thing.

So remember to use your sunscreen everyday, especially because summer is here.  As always, I recommend using at least SPF 30.

Also, it is important not to forget to reapply sunblock regularly, especially after swimming or sweating activities.  As I’ve stated earlier, there really is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen contrary to popular belief.

Maine Laser Skin Care carries an excellent line of sunscreens (especially for the face) that you can purchase online or in our office.
The point is that you need to actually use sunscreen regularly in order for your skin to be prone to all the sun’s effects of aging.

Enjoy this summer, but enjoy it with protection!
