Toenail Fungus Treatment Update

Dr._TothAs I have discussed in a previous blog post, Dr. Christopher Toth, who is the only doctor in New England’s tri-state area (Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont) to perform laser treatment for toenail fungus, has begun his work with us in the past month.  His first day on May 21 consisted of a patient treatment and an in-service education for both Becky and Denise on the specifics of his unique therapy.

Relevant to his inaugural day at Maine Laser Skin Care is an article published in the April 2014 edition of Lasers In Medicine And Surgery concerning laser treatment of toenail fungus (known as onychmycosis).  This study was performed in multiple centers in the US as well as Mexico and Greece.  Over 100 subjects were given only 1-2 laser treatments per subject, and then observed for up to 12 months .

Effectiveness of the laser treatment was based on the treated toenails’ appearances as well as cultures of the nails to prove that fungal process was resolved and the infection cured.  Over 95% of the subjects treated had significant clearance of the thickened and deformed nails typical of toenail fungal infections.

The conclusion of the researchers was that “under proper treatment conditions, results can be highly effective and appear to be about as good as medical science generally provides in the resolution of any disease”.  They also concluded that proper laser therapy should now be considered as the standard treatment for fungal nails that do not respond to topically applied medication.

Based on this new study,  I feel that Maine Laser Skin Care is making a major step forward for those in central and northern Maine by providing a venue for Dr. Toth to bring this cutting edge treatment to this area.   If you have any questions about this procedure, or would like to schedule a free initial consultation, give us a call at 207-873-2158.
