When Your Complexion Looks Dull

dull_to_newA common question that patients in their 40s or older ask me is, “Why does my complexion look so dull?”  The word “dull” seems like a vague and subjective term, but when your skin appears dull, you definitely notice it.

Basically, dull skin has lost that healthy glow that we all associate with younger complexions, a process that is common for people beginning in their 40s.  In your 40s, your skin is in a transitional phase being effected by the process of aging, which changes the texture and tone of the skin and cumulative damage from years of sun exposure.

Why does this happen?  On a cellular level, our skin cells do not shed off the surface of the skin as quickly in our 40s as they did in the past.  As more and more dead skin cells build up on the surface, the skin appears more and more “dull”.

When the aging and sun damage process has already occurred, how can we fix it?  First, removing the dead skin cell accumulations is most important.

The term exfoliation is used to describe the dead skin cell removal methods.  Washing the face with products containing glycolic acid and/or salicylic acid can gently exfoliate the skin as part of your normal daily regimen.

Hydrafacial-with-HandsHydrafacial therapy, performed here by our aesthetician Denise Gidney, can more aggressively remove dull accumulated skin cells and quickly restore a glowing complexion.  Beginning in your 40s and beyond, it is a good idea to have a Hydrafacial on a regular basis to maintain the exfoliated younger skin look.  Monthly sessions work well.

For skin in this age group that is more significantly damaged by skin and environmental factors, a series of fractional skin resurfacing treatments known as Fraxel can result in virtually new layer of skin on the face over 3-4 treatments.  The resulting appearance is of smoother skin from stimulation of collagen production and more even skin tone.  Fine lines are also lessened and pores are tightened and less noticeable.
