One common complaint I hear from many of my patients is that their skin, particularly their facial skin, frequently looks uneven and dull in tone, and feels rough and thickened in texture. This condition of the skin becomes more noticeable when you look at the before and after pictures (particularly the before photo) on the left.
Fortunately, the skin is treatable when in this state. A decrease in cell turnover and the accumulation of dead cells on the skin’s surface causes the skin to appear this way. Older and dead skin cells also are less able to retain moisture, leading to skin that feels dry and itchy.
The solution to this age-old problem is external exfoliation, which can be done by mechanical and chemical means. By definition, exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface.
Our skin naturally exfoliates with dead skin cells coming off in the process of washing or any friction on the skin. However, this natural process begins to slow down beginning in the mid-20s and continuing further with age.
Many of you may be familiar with the mechanical exfoliation method offered here at Maine Laser Skin Care in the form of HydrafacialMD. This method uses a vortex technique that combines fluid hydration of the skin with suction to remove impurities as well as dead dull skin.
A new offering for Maine Laser Skin Care is the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance. This procedure is an in-office chemical peel performed by our aesthetician Denise Gidney.
The Blue Peel Radiance uses a salicylic acid-based formulation that works for all skin types to exfoliate gently and improve overall complexion. This superficial exfoliation results in little or no downtime, and improves a wide range of skin concerns including sun damage, darkened pigment, and texture irregularities.
The Obagi Blue Peel is a gold standard treatment that is commonly copied but never reproduced in terms of its renowned outcomes. You will notice an improved radiance to the skin with tighter, smoother and brighter-looking skin even after even one treatment. For maximum benefit and especially for those with long-standing skin damage, a series of 4-6 peels will provide the best overall results.
