In previous winters, I have written newsletters and blog posts highlighting the special care needed for the skin during the cold weather months. Since spring is here at least (as far as the calendar is concerned), I thought it was time to address some special features of warm weather skin care so you are prepared when the warmth gets here.
Here are my top 4 Tips:
- Use Lighter Moisturizers— The warmer weather is usually accompanied by higher levels of humidity which will naturally keep the skin more hydrated. Sweat also acts to hydrate the skin on the surface. A lighter moisturizer will complement the sweat and humidity factors. Beware that a heavy moisturizer that works well in the drier winter months may, in the spring and summer, clog your pores and cause outbreaks.
- Cleanse with Lighter Gels— In the warmer weather, you want a product that will clean the skin removing sweat, makeup and dirt, but will also leave the skin cool and refreshed. Most of the best summer cleansers have more of an alcohol base, rather than an oil base, for that reason.
- Exfoliate More Often— Due to increased sweating, your skin needs to be exfoliated more in warm weather to remove accumulated oil and dead skin cells. Since you should be exfoliating more frequently, use of a gentle exfoliation product is important.
- Protect Your Skin— With the warmer weather comes stronger UV rays of the sun. Since you are spending more time outside with the better weather, you need to protect your skin with the frequent and generous amounts of sunscreen. While you apply sunscreen on the face, don’t forget to protect other frequently neglected areas such as the upper chest (decollette), back of the hands, and the neck.
Use these simple tips and enjoy the good weather while we have it. Those of us who live in New England (and other areas of the U.S. that were pummeled by snow in early 2015) really deserve it after this winter!
