Nighttime Is The Right Time For Your Skin

sleeping_clipartSometimes at night, we are all exhausted and ready to just collapse into bed.  We try to convince ourselves that it wouldn’t hurt to skip washing our faces just this one time.

However, like skipping brushing and flossing your teeth, this bad habit can become the norm with bad consequences for your skin.  The nightly routine of skincare helps to protect your skin, prevent skin problems, and even enhance the appearance of your skin long term.

Here are my recommendations for your nighttime, skin cleansing routine to make your night of rest a true “beauty rest”:

  1. face_washClean your face– The first important step is to wash your face in order to remove sunscreen, makeup, or any other buildup on your face from your day.  The best method is gently cleanse the skin with a mild facial cleanser such as Chamomile, especially if you have sensitive skin.  It is also advised to use cool or lukewarm water.  Pat your skin dry. Do not rub aggressively as this does not remove more dirt or makeup and may just irritate.
  2. Apply anti-aging products next– When your face is clean, your skin is ready to be protected.  Various anti-aging products and antioxidants work best this time.  Apply vitamin C serums if you have this product.  This is also the time when topical retinol creams or retinoids (like Retin-A) work best.  All of these products will aid in developing even skin tone, minimizing clogged pores, and decreasing aging effects of skin laxity.
  3. Use moisturizer liberallyA thick layer of moisturizer over the face will help to retain water within the skin during your 6-8 hours in bed.  Moisturized skin tends to be softer in feel and appearance and frankly younger.  While you are at the task of moisturizing your face, treat your neck, which frequently gets neglected even when the face is being actively treated, at the same time.
  4. eye-creamApply eye cream gently– As you all know, the skin around the eye is thinner and more delicate than skin elsewhere on the face.  If you properly hydrate and protect this delicate area, you can decrease the puffiness and wrinkles that appear over time.  The biggest thing about eye creams is that less is more.  Using larger amounts of eye cream does not help and may even irritate.  Use these products sparingly and gently around the eyes.  If you don’t experience problems the first couple of times you apply eye cream sparingly, you can increase the amount used gradually over time.
