Hair loss can be a traumatic problem for both men and women, and at all stages of life. While there are many cosmetic treatments for hair restoration available, not all treatments work for everyone and the most aggressive treatments involve invasive surgery.
Numerous studies from Korea, Italy, and Israel over the past several years have shown that using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be an effective therapeutic option for anyone experiencing hair loss. The trademarked Vampire technique, developed by Dr. Charles Runels, uses substances within the platelet-rich portion of the patient’s own blood to stimulate new hair growth.
As blood is drawn from the patient and spun down in a specially-developed, FDA-approved centrifuge, the person’s scalp is anesthetized with a strong local and topical anesthetic cream. The PRP is separated from the rest of the blood, and then reinjected into the scalp in the areas of thinning and balding.
Hair restoration scientists believe that the growth factors in PRP stimulates the growth of new stem cells below the surface of the skin. These stem cells in turn are thought to stimulate new and healthy hair follicle growth.
Another recent study in the British Journal of Dermatology tested subjects who had alopecia aerata, which is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation within the scalp, thereby causing hair loss. Patients were treated with placebo, steroid and PRP injections once a month for 3 months. They were then monitored for 12 months after the treatments were complete.
The scientists in this study found that the patients treated with PRP injections showed significant hair growth over the subjects in the other 2 groups. Additionally, PRP patients did not experience any side effects with treatments such as itchy or burning scalp that had been reported in other groups.
This form of hair loss, alopecia aerata, is very difficult to treat with other forms of therapy. Because of this fact, the researchers concluded that PRP scalp injections would be a safe and effective treatment for other types of hair loss, including the most common form of male pattern baldness.
As you have read in prior blog posts, I have trained and certified in several Vampire techniques by Dr. Runels including the Hair Regrowth Procedure. I have started treating patients for hair loss in the past week and will use Dr. Runels protocols to achieve the highest success rates.
More studies and research are ongoing in this exciting field. Obviously, I will certainly keep you abreast of more and new evidence as it appears.
