Lip fillers have become an increasingly popular treatment here at Maine Laser Skin Care for those who want to plump their lips. I have achieved that effect by injecting a hyaluronic acid filler to make the lips more full and fill lip lines caused by age, genetics and/or prior smoking. The treatment is relatively quick and quite effective right away, with further improving results over the next 2 weeks.
Up to now and according to the FDA , I could only tell people that the filler would last up to 6 months. However, as of October 1, 2015, the FDA has approved Juvederm Ultra XC as the only filler that can last up to 1 year in the lips while providing a natural looking contour. This decision is based on clinical trials to verify these findings.
During the most recent testing studies, more than 78% of subjects using Juvederm Ultra XC lip injections reported overall satisfaction with the appearance and texture of their lips at the one year mark post-injection. Other marketing studies have shown that this procedure is popular in both older and younger demographics.
Older women want to restore the fullness they had when they were younger and deal with aggravating lip lines. Younger women surveyed feel that fuller lips make them look more attractive, although this desire may also be influenced by many full-lipped celebrities and the rise of the “selfie”.
No matter what the demographic group requesting this lip procedure, I always emphasize the importance of natural-looking lips. No one, especially here in Maine, really wants the overfilled “duck lips” that some Real Housewife-type have exhibited in the past. Too little is much better than too much, as we can always add more in the former situation.
Numbing cream before the injections and novacaine mixed in with the filler during the injection makes this a minimally painful procedure. Post-injection care is also important to maintain the full lips for the full year.
It is very important to drink lots of fluids in the several weeks following lip injection. No hot liquids such as coffee or tea should be consumed for at least 72 hours after the treatment, as the filler is very sensitive to heat for several days.
One absolute is NO SMOKING, as tobacco will deteriorate the filler faster than normal in the same way that it effected the lip collagen to produce “smoker’s lines” in the first place. There are other reasons you should not smoke, but if you ignore all those other reasons, at least stop smoking for your lips’ sake.
