What’s New In The Past Year

Mid-year-reviewThe subject of this blog post comes from a suggestion of a patient who was receiving a laser treatment several weeks ago.  We were discussing many of the new developments at Maine Laser Skin Care in particular, and in the field of aesthetic medicine in general.

This patient suggested that I write a summary article of 2016 so far.  Her reasoning was good: since someone could easily miss a newsletter or blog post, then they might potentially miss a new procedure or development that could benefit them.

Based on that suggestion, I will outline the highlights of the past year, now that we are halfway through 2016.  I have also included links to the previous blog posts that delve into the procedures in more detail:

Vampire Facelift

vampire_facelift_bannerI first started performing the Vampire Facelift in August 2015 after training with the inventor of the procedure, Charles Runels M.D.  Over the past 11 months, I have performed this treatment on about 60 patients with results that ranged from very good to excellent.

The vast majority of patients have seen improvements in skin color & tone, and decreases in skin crêpiness over a period of several months.  Most patients describe having friends and family whom they have not seen in some time comment on how great their skin looks.  Our first patient from last August still comes in gushing about how much she loves the improvements.

Vampire Hair Regrowth

vampire_hair_needleSo far, I have performed Vampire Hair Regrowth on about 15 men and 2 women.  The best results are definitely seen in the younger patients who have the earliest loss of hair and the darkest hair.

All patients who have had this procedure done have noticed that the hair thickens in the area treated.  However, the changes are not as noticeable in those patients with grey or white hair.

The 3 monthly procedures in men result in progressive improvement after each treatment.  I do have several men who want additional treatments to maintain the effects.  One of my first patients is also coming back on his 1-year anniversary for that same purpose.

Kybella

Kybella_ModelI have been using Kybella since its approval by the FDA, and had finished the required training this past fall.  This fat-melting treatment that is injected into the area known as the “double chin” has actually proven itself to be even better than originally advertised.

Most of the patients treated have seen improvements following each treatment, although most of them need at least 2 treatments a month apart to reach their goals.  I have treated several patients 3 times, as they wanted almost complete reversal of the fat in that area.

Although skin tightening in the double chin has not been proven in medical studies as of yet, many doctors who have used Kybella in the past year (including myself) have seen a very nice improvement in reducing loose skin.  Several lectures at a recent national laser and aesthetic conference described this observation with several theories for this improvement.

One theory is that with the fat gone, there is no gravitational pull on the skin.  Another theory is that the inflammation caused by the fat melting process itself induces a skin tightening.  My feeling is that the skin tightening is probably due to a combination of both of these effects.

Coolsculpting

rsz_coolsculpting_in_actionDespite its name, Coolsculpting happens to be the hottest treatment in the area known as body sculpting.  This technology has been proven to be very effective for several years, but it is relatively new to Maine.

By literally freezing fat in a treated area, Coolsculpting kills the fat cells within your body.  From there, your body will then reabsorb and dispose of the fat.

Coolsculpting is particularly suited to those stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise efforts, such as the stomach or the area underneath the chin.   Such fat areas are especially difficult for women to reduce through healthy living habits alone.

Already, we are seeing patients searching for this treatment and coming to Maine Laser Skin Care from all over the state.  We have even had one patent travel all the way from New Brunswick, Canada for a day of treatment.

Copper DNA Repair

copper_DNA_clearThis is a brand new product we are offering that has been shown to dramatic improve skin tone and reduce skin crêpiness.  Our initial small orders for this product have completely sold out, but we continue to order more as more and more people are finding this combination product helpful.  As I have said in a previous blog post, my wife loves this product and wants more almost immediately after she runs out of it.

Hydrasilk Plus

This other brand new product is a super moisturizer that I personally use due to a tendency to dry skin.  The hyaluronic acid-based solution allows your skin to absorb and retain much more moisture than it would naturally be able to hold.

This is just a summary of some of Maine Laser Skin Care’s developments over the past year.  One of the many reasons I enjoy practicing medicine in this exciting field of aesthetics is that new treatments and improvements are developing all the time.

As always, I remain committed to not only keep up, but also to excel in this field to bring the last and best of these technologies to all my patients in Maine.  Call us at (207) 873-2158 to inquire about any of the groudbreaking procedures and products, or to set up a free consultation to further discuss your options.
