Autumn Is Kybella Time

scarf_silouetteOne patient of mine recently commented that she looked forward to the fall and winter.  She didn’t particularly like the seasons for the weather as you might expect, but rather it was a time that she could wear a decorative scarf or turtleneck in order to hide her double chin.

Although she is not overweight, she told me that everyone in her family had double chins, and that she has been very self-conscious about it from a very early age.  She is probably not the only one who wears a scarf that feels this way no matter what the weather.

Because I feel that you shouldn’t have to wear scarves or turtlenecks if you don’t have to,  I am declaring the fall season to be Kybella time.  If you haven’t heard of Kybella before, it is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently removes the fat in the double chin area through a chemical process that literally melts the fat.

kybella_men_baInterestingly, among the population of people I have treated with Kybella here at Maine Laser Skin Care, about 40% have been men.  This is a much higher percentage of men than any other treatment I do including Botox, which is about 10% male.

Despite not being generally self-conscious about other aspects of their appearance, it turns out double chins really bug many men too.  Men also have the option of wearing scarves or turtlenecks during the fall and winter, I suppose, but it is still a problem when they are wearing them for the same reasons as women with double chins.

The FDA approved Kybella for use in the U.S. over a year ago.  It is a drug consisting of deoxycholic acid, which is naturally produced by the liver and is introduced into the gastrointestinal tract after you eat to help digest and absorb fat.

kybella_needleWhen this medication is injected precisely into the fat of the double chin area, it results in a chemical reaction that destroys the fat cells, changing the fat from a solid to liquid state.  Your body then reabsorbs the fat, processes it, and disposes of it from the body.

Once the fat and fat cells leave the body, they are permanently gone.  Even if you were to gain weight later in life, you will not regain fat in the double chin area.

Generally, the treatment involves 15-20 injections into the area.  The number of injections and the number of sessions of injections will vary with the person and the amount of fat they have in that area.

kybella_got_fatOn average, most patients with a moderate amount of fat in the double chin will require at least 2 sessions that are a month apart, although we have had a few patients who require 3 sessions to get the maximum effect.  Each subsequent session usually is easier and requires less Kybella injection per session because there is less fat in the area each time.

If you hate your chin and do not want to think about going under the knife for plastic surgery or liposuction,  Kybella will be the treatment for you.  There is some pain and swelling after the treatment, as the medication is working under the skin to melt the fat and start the absorption process, but it is much less post procedure downtime than the more invasive surgical options.

If you are wondering if you are the right candidate for this procedure and want to look better in the mirror or in selfies, give us a call at (207) 873-2158 for a free and confidential consultation.  In the consultation, we will give you both an estimate of the number of sessions you will need, and the approximate cost of treatment.
