This month’s Product of the Month is a daily-use multiphase corrective serum that has been clinically proven to reduce discoloration from facial skin injuries, including sun damage and post-acne. It is a SkinCeuticals product that we call the Discoloration Defense.
This product is formulated with a synergistic blend of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, kojic acid, and sulfonic acid to brighten skin and even skin tone with continued use. It is also free of parabens, fragrances, gluten, silicone, and hydroquinone, which makes this product a perfect complement to professionally-administered treatments such as chemical peels and laser based therapies.
In a 12-week clinical study, and when used in combination with treatments such as peels and laser, Discoloration Defense significantly
evened out the skin tones of those who were studied and improved their patches of skin discoloration, including stubborn brown spots and post-acne scars. The patients undergoing this study rated improvements from 59-81% on average.
We recommend using Discoloration Defense twice daily, and it can be layered with other skin care products. Apply 3-5 drops of this product to your face, then pat it in gently.
When applied in the morning, use it after any vitamin C serum and before you apply sunscreen. Especially since the sun is the most common cause of skin discoloration, we highly recommend the use of sunscreen every day, which should be broad spectrum (protecting from both UVA and UVB rays), and an SPF of 35 or greater.
If you have any facial discoloration that you would like to address, using this product would be a good starting point, as most of the over-the-counter advertised products work poorly, if at all. Discoloration Defense is also great when combined with more aggressive tone evening and pigmentation treatments such as chemical peels and lasers.
